Laavanya Ghosh is a growing content creator, instructor and performer, posting her content on Instagram @laavanyaghosh.

About

Laavanya was born in Kolkata and later based in Bhubaneswar. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Odissi Dance from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. Deeply rooted in classical training, she has also completed her Bhaskar (7th Year) in Odissi from Pracheen Kala Kendra and is currently exploring the therapeutic potential of dance through a diploma in Performing Arts Therapy.

Laavanya is an ‘A’ Graded Empanelled Doordarshan Artiste, a Graded Artiste of Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC), and an Empanelled Dancer of SPICMACAY under the Ministry of Culture. These distinctions affirm her dedication to the purity of form and her contributions to the Indian cultural space.

Laavanya is the founder of Hamshadhwani Dance School & Studio in Kolkata, where she nurtures students in classical techniques with emotional depth. She credits her mother’s dream of being a dancer as her core inspiration and guiding light in her journey.

Social Media Journey

Laavanya’s digital journey started during the lockdown. A time when traditional performances paused but her creative spirit took off. Faced with restrictions, she developed seated choreographies that spotlighted abhinaya (facial expressions), introducing a fresh and intimate way to expand Odissi through the screen.

Her brief, dynamic reels quickly connected with international communities, de-mystifying traditional dance and opening it up, making it participatory, interactional, and emotionally satisfying. With her growing confidence came increasing viewership with many of her choreographies hitting million-view milestones, being recreated and shared by fans throughout India and internationally.

Laavanya has successfully blended innovation with tradition, experimenting with music, staging, and costumes while staying true to the discipline of Odissi. She believes that when used thoughtfully, platforms like Instagram can be powerful tools for classical artists enabling them to reach broader audiences.

A strong advocate for authenticity and self-expression, she often echoes her personal motto: “Be your own saviour, be your own hero.”
